The stock grips are adequate but hard and after an hour or so, my hands need a break. I tried GrabOns (a.k.a. "Grip Puppies") but they made the grip diameter too large for comfort.

I didn't find a large selection of aftermarket grips that were known to mount without modification but then the Avon "Metric Touring Air Cushioned" grips caught my eye and claimed 100% compatibility. They had a good contour and texture so I went for it. Wanting to keep the all-black look of the stock grips, I went with the anodized grips.

The one thing that bothered me was that the stock grips are open at the end to allow weights to screw in at the bar ends but the Avons are closed, meaning the end weights cannot be reused with the Avon grips. I was hoping to add weights inside the bar, like a "Bar Snake", but when I removed the end weights I saw that the bar end attachment was stamped in and not removable without considerable (and probably destructive) persuasion. It also prevents insertion of weights into the bar itself.

Plan B came to me when I noticed that the Avon grips are a bit longer than the stock grips, so there will be room inside the grips between the bar end and the grip end. I just needed to find suitable weights to fill the space. Lots of web searching later, I found "coin sinkers" that looked perfect. These are coin-shaped lead weights used for fishing. The half-ounce sinkers were a small enough diameter to fit inside the grips with enough clearance to not interfere with the throttle and not vibrate against the inside of the the clutch-side grip. They're lead, so soft and easy to drill a center hole in and stack with an M8-1.25 cap screw through the center.

There's enough room for 3 coin sinkers skewered by a substantial M8 bolt with a washer in each bar end; I also used blue thread lock on the bolt since the clutch-side grip won't be coming off again. These weights (about 50g) aren't nearly equal to the stock weights (about 200g) but they're better than nothing; as far as I know.

Getting the old throttle off and popping out the cable ends was easy. Loosen the cables as much as possible with the adjusters, first.

Putting the new throttle on was pretty much just as easy; just be sure to leave a little space between the coin sinkers bolt head and the end of the grip. Not going to do a step-by-step on the Avon grips since it's pretty thoroughly covered by the included instructions.

I purposely bought the grip model without the built-in "throttle assist" because I already have a Cramp Buster I'm happy with and it's one less thing that can break.

The only issue I [almost] have is that the throttle cable adjusters, from the bar to under the tank to down at the throttle bodies were delivered all adjusted to the max. I mentioned this in another post; don't know if this covered by the warranty or not but since the throttle grip basically meets the spec for free play, I don't think I have a case for having them center the adjusters.

I've been riding with the Avon grips for a few weeks now and like them. Haven't experienced any hand tingling or numbness like I occassionally did with the stock grips and I don't notice any more or less vibration with the new grips than with the old.

Ride safe!

Thanks for the write up, been considering installing the avon heated grips, nice to see that they fit ok. I think they look good on the bird too.

THX.. Is there any reason that with a slight mod to the grip the weights would reattach?

Think it may take a bit more than a slight mod but a worthwhile idea to consider. :-)
I was able to pop the end cap off; it's screwed on from the inside. The exposed edge of the grip is unfinished and fugly and the end of the rubber cover would need to be clamped to the tube.
You'd also need a standoff of exactly the right length to extend the weight connection to the bar end since the grips overhang the bars by more than an inch.
Cutting the grip to line up with the bar end isn't a practical option given the changing contours along the length of the grip.

I'm way open to ideas to restore the end weights, I've just had a head start in thinking about it. I really like the look of the stock end weights but still haven't noticed a difference in vibration. Keep the ideas coming!

PapaSmurfMC,

Thanks to you I've just blown $108.00 on a set of these with the throttle boss.......

I Really liked the look of yours and bit the bullet and ordered a set.
I will have to see if I can incorporate my Kaoko throttle lock with them and if not I'll use the Throttle Boss.

I have these on my Storm. No vibrations, even without the bar end weights, and was a piece of cake to install. Any grips that fit the Star line of cruisers will fit our Birds.

I've posted this before (in all of the throttle grip broken threads) that any time you replace the stock grips, use a dremmel to "ease off" the sharp edge of the switch housing where the cable enters. Did you? Any plastic holder that contacts that edge will get a "nick" in it over time. Eventually that nick will result in a weak point on the cable holder, and cause it to snap off...usually when your giving it a fistful, too.

BNZ433,

You keep talking about "use a dremmel to ease off the sharp edge of the switch housing where the cable enters" and I went to your other posts to see if there wear any pic's. Alas, there were none (that I could see). I plan on changing my grips and would like to see where I would dremmel the sharp edge before I screw it up by dremmeling the wrong piece.

Here's where they all break (aftermarket, or OEM heated). These were the Kuryakyn ISO Blacks. Even if you inspect the stock or any that haven't broken, you'll likely see little nicks, etc., right where this one (mine) broke. This little tab takes all of the tension of the throttle cable when accelerating:

Here's the switch housing before the "easing" of the edge. Note the marks left from the plastic retainer for the throttle cable barrel.

Here's the switch housing after filing down the sharp edge (can even use sandpaper or a small file if you don't have a dremmel). This eliminates the sharp contact point on the retainer eventually weakens the tab until it breaks under acceleration:

EDIT - had to resize the "after" picture so you can actually see it.

bnz, saw your posts so it was the first thing I checked when I opened the switch housing. Don't know whether it's a Storm thing or a model year thing but mine had lots of clearance, the cable entry point looks recessed back further than yours and the cable pulls nice and straight, so no risk of cable nicks or scrapes.

When I filed mine down I squared off the bottom to make it flat so the throttle cable housing had support across the whole width. This is something everyone should take a look at. Mine did not fail but after seeing others posts I took a look and there was already a cut/groove in the plastic.

Papa - the plastic grip part is the one that contacts the housing, not the cable or the barrel. But if your plastic part isn't showing signs of getting nicked, then you might be okay.

I proudly claim the honor of being the only one here who truly has PROPER grips for a triumph. Gran turismo, often referred to as "Triumph grips" back in the day because they came with them. Don't ask me how i made the throttle side fit.....it was a nightmare to say the least !

Took the day off today to prepare the bike for a 2 day trip to Mpumalanga (the old Eastern Transvaal) which has some of the best riding roads in the country and guess what! Both the Avon grips and Nonoise earplugs arrived within an hour of each other! Yipee! I love seeing couriers arriving!
So I've been walking around with the earplugs in while fitting the Grips.
My only issue with grips is the lateral movement on the throttle side which is quite significant. Anyone got a quick fix as i'm leaving in the morning!!

EDIT! All sorted! I fitted an 'O' ring between the grip and throttle housing.

Can't speak for the Avon fix as I have the same grips as Bnz, but they came with a small length of plastic conduit, from memory it was about 20-25 long and around 20mm dia, that you insert to take up any of that slack. Hope that helps

Suspect you didn't get the "Metric Touring Fitment". Mine were a perfect fit. No lateral movement at all. Does the part number of your grips start with "MT"?

Yup! Part number starts with MT and there is a decal on the package indicating all the various metric models they fit. Also used the 'B' part which is glued to the throttle tube as stated in the instructions!

Maybe a model year thing. I have been noticing some subtle differences between my throttle - side switch housing (2013) and others I've seen posted here.

Glad you found a creative fix.

Jumbo - I have the same grips, but in "contrast cut" black.

I got mine from Pacific Coast Star (only to find out that they have an Atlantic Coast Star sister company) online. They have matching pegs (both chrome and the contrast cut black) that I wanna get for my Storm, but likely need to machine up some stuff for them to fit.

Just installed the Avon Chrome (PN MT-AIR-90 Chrome), they included an excellent instruction page.
Had them installed in 45 minutes (allowing time for the glue to set) and went for a 50km ride. Compared to
the standard grips, these were great. No tingling or numbness. Checked my throttle housing and no chafe
marks. All is good

Sorry mate I did not view your request until this thread came up again. I am pretty sure I used the thickest rubber insert, and that still allows you to screw it on an off a bit even when it is set.

The Breakaway + The Mustang Seat would be by "A Countr Mile"the best investments I have put on the bird.

Otherwise known as Grip Puppies and Grab Ons. They're just a foam sleeve that slides over the grips. I tried them and found they made the grips too fat to comfortably hold onto for long periods of time.

No, those appear to be different, a fabric outer sleeve on an inner foam wrap. Apparently add only 5/16" to the grip diameter. I think I'll check them out.
