Hi there, just to show you my ongoing project
I have been reading this Forum for a while and did find it very very nice, friendly and passion driven, so I logged in...

I have already a Thunderbird Sport 900, this one was originally tuned by Mecatwin

When I saw the TBird 1600-1700, I definitively loved the engine and felt like I could do something more "Triumph old days " with this bike

Photoshopping ...

Played with 3D CAD's ....

Purchased the bike (1700) and started the mods...

Seat will come after

I will use raask accessories to move paddles

I have a question for xperts:
Are you aware of any informations, tips around the instrument box:
It sounds to me like I will have to move it and will not have the option to change to a smaller thing

Any suggestions, comments, even bashing ...
Take care
Alain

First off welcome ... and what a great looking tbird sport you've got there. I've always liked the work Mecatwin does.

Now, on to the 1600 project, great start and so much better thought out than what Raask did with their cafe conversion. (though they do have some handy parts for your project). It still looks like it might be on the thick side but so far what you are doing looks great. I'm afraid I can't help you much on your questions as I've not gone down that road at all. I would think that the instrument connections are the same for other Triumph models (perhaps not the connector itself but the wiring) that you might be able to make another models dials work, though you would most certainly be giving up some of the features such as support for the LCD display) . I would think basic dials would be relatively easy to support.

Really excited to see this project progress Alain. Good luck

Gotta agree with Thatch. Tbird sport looks awesome. I also like the idea of massive cafe racer as TB16 will be one if you get it done. Raask's cafe racer looked, to my eye, like thruxton has thrown up on tbird. Nothing really fitted like they should and it was just a mess. How ever, your design looks very good. Only thing that really sticks in my eye is that 'cruiser rake' of Tbird (not really sure if I choosed my words right but i hope you understand).

WELCOME AL

hey things are all go for you

one tip though before you finalise the conversion, ride the thruxton. i had one and its handling was very poor in cmparison to the bird, dont want you to end up with a less good handling bike

the images look great though, classy and to brief, hope it goes well and keep up the story

as to the instruments its sommit i am interested in too, a dual clock set up front would be superb

Before the TBisrd Sport I had a Thruxton during 6 months, you are right, poor handling

BTW, for the instrument, it sounds like there is, so far, no other way than keeping it

Here is the box in witch the original instrument will fit
I'll build that next week with a 3D printer, that I have, and it will be coated black

In situation

So...I'm wondering about you're 3D printer. What material is used for the output? That part then becomes a plug for casting?
Or is it a mock up for fitting, then a CNC mill spec?

I may be missing something. Are there 3D printers now, that can build structural parts?

dizz

the 3d printer i use uses a fine plaster that lies on a bed and a printer head moves very similar to a normal printer but casts a thin layer of glue where required to build. before the next printer head pass a second bed rises and a roller spreads a fine dry plaster over the top of the glue and so it repeats.... time consunming
the disadvantage is the plaster needs hardening after a build to do this you need to soak it in a super glue type clear liquid which then needs dampened off this means passing the build quickly between each hand regularly for a bout 4 mins ( or its stuck to you ) , and the heat generated when the clear glue hardens is intense sso you cant really holdd it for long in 1 hand anyway. however if you are careful you can use it without hardening it off, but it is very brittle. detail is very good, cant use it for sacrificial casting though but other forms are ok

I have the UPrint 3D printer and it's building structural parts in what is named ABS+.
a XYZ head is meting and laying 0.2mm layers of this material in a process that can be long (this part will take 7 hours to build)
It is strong enough to do such a part, it's young modulus, strength & fatigue properties are close to ABS, tempwise it starts to melt at 135°C.
On the 900Tbird at the beginning of this post, there is a bench of parts such as the carb grid holder that I builded with it.
It is so convenient, think it, draw it build it,paint it, test it.
The only thing is that painting with a perfect surface finish needs few long iterations. and for the nirvana the last iterations is made at the paint shop.
It is not a cheap thing, and I use it a lot in my business for rapid prototyping , but if i remove the time I spend and the cost of the machine, the material cost will be below 40$ for the instrument holder.

.... errr..... could you make a gauge cup holder for an oil pressure / water temperature gauge such as this one:
(SMITH Dual Gauge)

I think you know what I'm wanting to say - a cup holder thingy like this:
but without that stoooopid foot mount!

If so what would you need?
(dimensions, cost, address, etc )

Give me dimensions and a quick drawing on email ... this kind of part will take 10 minutes to draw on cad
You take care of polish and painting then it will be material cost only
to do the maths 500 cc is 175 euros + 3 euros per running hour ... (will bring your part to around 30 )
I absolutely do not make a business out of that, just fun, and as you are not very far from me, you take your bird pick it up and pay a drink

Welcome AlainD and a happy new year to you.
What a great project I think we can all learn something from it if you have time to keep us informed.
I see you live in a nice worm place not like here in Germany 51 days to go until I can ride again if the weather is ok

Really nice work so far AlainD. You're getting a much line with the tank/seat/cowl than I anticipated. Good job! can't wait to see the finished project.

wow, I think I just had a premature ejeculation. That is going to be a great looking bike when it is finished. Just needs some really short exhausts.

Little update :

Raask paddles are now installed
Short exhausts will come next week
Seat within 15 days

I have been struggling to find a way to fit this damn big tacho in the new design
As it sounds like you cannot get rid of it

Now the thing takes place in a bonnie size headlight that will be built with the 3D printer when all the details will be completed

2 pictures :

To be able to fit nicely in a 200mm headlight, and due to the damn high connector
Inside it is 2 x 75mm instead of the standard 180mm lamp
Glass is not shown there as well as misc things, just to give the idea ....

Can't wait

Nice ray tracing on that first one. The instrument is larger than I thought. When you showed the first
case, I didn't see how it could work. This is a much improved idea. BraVO.

Nice solution.

I thought you already had the seat though?

What are you doing for the exhaust? The mock-up picture looks like you are going with just the short TORs.

Thanks for the update.

The pictures were taken with the TBS seat, to have an idea, it will be almost a duplica, a little enlarged and the sitting area will be +7 cm long allowing Mrs AlainD (rather thin) to feel the torque.

Good job, and good luck with the rest of it.

There ya go... What a place to show off your work Alain. Would certainly get a lot of attention there and you'd get to meet a few of the boys from the forum (you decide whether that goes in the plus column or the minus column).

My wife wants to go and visit her old home in Toulon. So I may well be your way in the not too distant future, but much more likely with family in tow than just me on my bike.

Again, great work Alain. It's really coming together for you.

Today's set of pictures showing a little more

First set ... around the light/instrument combo, on the last one, it is obvious that something will have to be done for the turn lights

Second set ... working around the fact that I want this baby to look thin, thin, thin...

So far so good, pressure is rising

Not really my cup of tea, but i gotta hand it to you for taking it to such a degree and doing it well to boot ! whether or not it's my thing i'm anxious to see the final result. i do like it in some ways. But the cool thing is that you took a Tbird to a TRUE custom degree. not just adding the typical parts, but truly redesigning many major parts that no one else has touched. true custom Tbird,. For me the stock bird with some chrome added IS custom because it's a design like what i've always liked in a bike....it's what i myself would have done. So i have no desire to do that. But you have my respect, and if i had a vision of the Tbird that i wanted i'd not have the energy drive or balls to do that. Now hurry up and finish it so we can see the final result dammit !!!

It's getting repetitive for me to say 'good job' Alain, but 'good job' nonetheless. You are really changing the silhouette and perceived weight of the bike. It's really looking good.

Are you going to address the pulley?

That is a question I still don't have the answer
At first I think that I'lll keep it at the begining

Secondly, with the amount of torque and the weight of the baby that gives an impressive amount of Newton's on that piece of transmission
Going more classical might be a problem in finding something that would not have to be exchanged every 100 km's
I haven't done the maths yet, but I suspect that to be a challenge.

The amazing thing is the more you remove, the more other things show up to be removed or adjusted
example: on the original, you could not really see the horn or at least that was not shocking , now this horn is clearly ugly and something has to be done
adding another couple of hours in the project.

I took a serious hit in schedule due to the seat

A week ago Back from a business trip, went to see the big baby and saw that ugly stuff:

Got crazy, and this morning, saw this one

It's now going to be a challenge to get it done before spring ...

Finally the seat is exactly what I wanted after 3 trials

To rise a little the baby (1.5cm), went to Rocket3 dampers

To keep it thin, light and turn lights in seat (thanks to 3D printer)

Agreed Alain, I think you nailed it on this one. The previous attempts were nice but lacked something. One was a bit stubby and the other had a bit of a hook nose to it that I didn't care for. This one give you a good proportion on the bike and keeps that dead straight body line that just makes a cafe (for me at least). The tail light looks like it's going to come out nice as well.

I'm curious though, what are you doing for air intake on the bird now? Are you going to remove the snorkel or are you routing air in from some other place. Just seems that the solid plate over the top intake air box will starve the bike if you don't do something there.

Thanks for posting.

A Quick update (this is so dam slow) ...
Now the baby has a seat.
The target was to design a seat that was looking single, but actually beeing double (of reasonable volumes)

That's all for now, but next week will be intense, I'll shoot a video

Hi Alain

Looks great and looking forward to the finished article ... as I am sure you are!

Can I ask about the handlebar risers you have on the bike and where you got them from? I can't tell from the pictures if you are running 1" fat bars or if they are 7/8". I want something like them without the rearward bend to move my stock bars forward a bit.

Have fun and all the best, Lee.

I think that they come from a speed triple

It is a temporary handlebar in 7/8" with machined cylinders to adapt original TBird 1" diameter

I still don't know what will be the handle bar, but next week(crossing my fingers again and again) the baby will be fired to test them in real life.

BTW Daz, I've confirmed fitment for the Ohlins TR-326/Type: S36E twin shock and a price from David@303Cycle.com (he's also a local Denver Ohlins dealer) of $610 for the set... and that includes set-up by a certified Ohlins tech.

MON DEUX! Those are expensive! 790???

At $610, the Ohlins are actually a deal.

This is truly an inspiring project. I don't usually go for heavy customizing but you are doing exactly what the bike needs! In the begining I was so dissapointed with the positioning of the speedo I nearly didn't buy the TBird, but the handling was so good, I couldn't resist it. I absolutely hate the speedo and lcd dial, especially as Triumph put it set so far back on the tank. where it is, is simply dangerous. It needs to be upfront like you show it.

How many gallons /litres will your tank hold? I have wanted to have such a conversion made, the only difference is that I am happy to keep my longhaul seat with pillion seat.

If you want to go into production, I would happily buy a tank and speedo holder from you! Name your price ;-)

Excellent...

Well that is a good question : I did not filled the tank up, but the estimate is 21L

I think that now that he made one following my drawings, this guy could sell other tanks below 2000 ???
You might contact him directly, but it's an artist, do not expect him to be on time
Link
For the speedo holder, coming soon, I'll describe the work around. as now it looks like that :

If you are interrested in that, it is not straight forward :
You'll need to machine a little the original, unsolder the connector grab few wires and sold it away
After that, the plastics needs some treatment before going to the paint shop
I do not want to make any business on that (I have enough) so I will sell the material cost as well as the machine time to build the part only to passionates ppl
it will be around 50 ??? or a bottle of good scotch if you come to pick up he part...

I am still awaiting few parts, one beeing the optics of the America, is expected Friday, as I finally gave up with the Light/Speedo combo
It is working, but at the end, Optic is too small
The pictures that will come this week end will show a lot more details

It's all sounding very positive. I am not really sure what you mean by the 'optics' from the America, so I will see what you mean when you publish more pictures. Soldering the wires will not be a problem.

Although you are doing a great job in improving the looks overall, Ideally we should simply use a speedo and rev counter from another model and forget the ugly speedo altogether, but I guess that will be too difficult!

The new tank looks much bigger than the original, so I am guessing it will hold more...? One concern I have is the handlebar movement, will they be able to turn as much as they do now? and how will you stop them from hitting the tank?

Re payment: A trip to collect it sounds fun, the Scotch wont be a problem, but you are right it would need to be something very special (I have some ideas) javascript:InsertTextAtCursor(document.form.Message," ");

The America light bulb (200mm) can adapt to the TBird, giving (in my mind) a better proportion:
I am sorry not to have a front view, but to give an idea ....

Unfortunately, for the speedo, for now you are stick wih the original ,no way, so far to have nice little things and be able to operate the bike.

Optimization took many trials...

I shoot on D-10 for the paint booth
I lost my few remainig hair with this projet, I am sure that something will happen before
The tank is still not perfectly sealed, Rest pedals for passenger left to be done, tuning few eletronics to handle all the LED's
I will keep the Shories, so far they are the best estethic balance I found, the Raask are thinner but cops and neibourghs prefer the shorties.

As Alain has said, it can't be done because the speedo's circuit board contains electronics that control lots of other functionality.

Yep... and that's the EXACT logic I've been using as I gear up for my "Crisscross the Country" road-trip!

By the way, my accessories grand-total is NOT quite as high as the total for the Coffee Bird.

Yes Alain, I can feel from the tone of your most-recent posts that your patience is wearing thin and you are ready to ride.... again, here's to getting her rode-worthy as soon as possible.

A first set of parts went out
and the tank+seat are expected next week

Those guys made me crazy I learned tha bad way that the delay they give must be magnified by 5 to 10

Awesome work Alain.

Love the rear-end view but then I always was a butt man.

Are you happy with the bars - the pegs seem a long way back for them to be that high? Also how do find the ground-clearance?

The icing on the cake would be to see a pic of you riding it now.

Best money I ever spent.

Wow I am amazed at how great it came out. What you have there is truly unique. I wonder if Triumph will at some point make their own Cafe version of the Bird. Whether they do or not though yours will still be a very unique one of a kind build. You did a great job on it.

Thanks for all of that
beeing riding the baby this sunday, a lot of fun ...
the riding position is OK, I will say that on narrow bends, it beats my other TBird
At a bar, I have seen HD riders taking pictures of the baby.
I have to work on the map now to get rid of the pops.
This torque is so much fun to play with, and the noise is just perfect.

Back to the EMC high performing shock absorbers ( a big improvement)

And now Mrs AlainD can share the torque
Holders made using the 3D printer and tested at 510 kg, giving a safety margin of 10

Basically 3 tubes assembly gas shocks absorbers
32 positions adjusting discharge/compression ratio
Springs are also settable in 6 steps

Those are designed for RIII and have a legnth that is roughly + 2cm as opposed to the stock TBird
There is a need for 2 spacers, to set the clearance
They are expensive (790 Euros)

EMC is basically designing and manufacturing shocks for racing.

I am not going to race with this bike, but I enjoy montain roads

There are not that many TBirds in the area,
Finally I could find one and capture side by side pictures

Original vs. coffee Tbird

I am rather happy, as no one around me beleived me, 7 months ago, when I was saying : it's gonna be "thin"

Still my seat is temporary, looks like it's too hot for ppl to get on schedule

Alain, you're an artist. That bird is absolutely gorgeous! Proud of your work, and I'm hoping you make it to some magazines! I'd love more people outside of this forum to see your work. Fantastic job!

very sweet alain

even as a sit up bike so much of your style could be retained and so much of it looking good

if i had to pick out three things

it would be the tank - fantastic
the speedo - just superb
and the headlight - so befitting

great job alain

the more i look at the speedo the more i need to invest in a whiskey and a road trip

The bike is a fantastic job Alain. The mods look great. The style of bike is great. But I dont see it as a TBird.

It's gotta be a C-Bird.

I love what you've done with the rear fender - reminds me of an Alien.

I personally would like to see pics of the bike with a rider on it to see how the ergonomics are. Regardless, Alain, you are a master. Well done!

after 10000 km's C-Bird is going to receive a little lifting to welcome a new friend in the stable

More to come ....

This is a fantastic looking machine with customizing that matches the character of Triumph. Triumph with all their money and designers couldn't come up with better TB Sport. Great job AlainD.

The bike looks great, I wish I had the talent. How much fuel does it hold ? Have you given thought to having the R3 gauges on, is it possible ?

Thanks, Mike

Thats one great looking Tbird, reminds me of the old days when the rockers ruled the roads. back in the old country....many moons ago.
