Looking at upgrading from halogen to led, has anybody brought there's from ebay or Amazon? Did they fit inside the standard thunderbird headlight housing? I've done a little research and found that most aftermarket led headlights are 5.75 x 85mm deep I don't see that fitting inside the housing

No I've not had the need as I replaced the whole unit over ten years ago with a seven inch assembly. Two reasons, I prefer the look and I had a stone smash the original one on a long trip and couldn't find a replacement, plenty of 7" sealed beams around though.

I bought this one from Amazon back in 2018. Link It wasn't an exact fit, I had to file the bezel a bit to get it ti fit. I think it was worth it for the extra elumination.

So the light you purchased was 85mm deep and you had no trouble fitting the light into the original headlight bucket? I'm still not really convinced hahaha might have to just bite the bullet and buy them

Agreed, 7" bucket is cool and great LED light spread!

Yes, that's the only issue I had.

Have a little compassion, Lee.... AZ may secretly suffer from a common biker condition known as Chromious Envious.

I went with a 6" Buffalo bucket and Cree LED from eBay ($30) a long time ago.

It arrived in a shiny box without a single mark on it anywhere - no brand, specs, nada, zip - aside from DOTSAE on lens. Six elements, big aluminum heatsink (probably not necessary), plenty of room for harness, connectors and 12v to USB (N117) power adapter feeding dashcam and GPS. Made a custom mount.

When LED headlights first came out a decade ago, they sold for $500 (Harley) to $800 (Nolden).

Back to Halogen, at least for now.
The CREE headlight I bought in February of 2021 died yesterday - blinked once then all gone. Had a 5-year warranty, went almost 4. So, naturally, I had to crack it open to see what's in there. It's all about the lenses.

There were a total of 7 tiny LEDs on circuit board (same unit pictured in previous post). It was well made, with thermal paste between board and massive aluminum heat sink/housing behind (plastic) lens. Produced an amazing amount of light from those tiny yellow LEDs, three of which are visible in photo. Something in circuit failed that took out all 7 LEDs. Good that it happened at home, would've been SOL at night. Always had a spare H4 in kit before this CREE unit, going back to that.

Make that 9 LEDs - found a couple extras under high beam lens.
While this type of light makes use of lenses and CREE LEDs, I see other LED headlights in H4 bulbs, basically an H4 covered with as many LEDs as possible. Have to wonder how effective those are. They do get hot - with no means of cooling, that headlight bucket would be cooking everything in it. Wonder if they're approved, too.

My friend says I'm "old school," and Halogen with a glass lens is more my speed. He's right.

I prefer halogen on my 4wd, better penetration in the country darkness.

Agreed, I think Halogen light is more focused. Never tried any of the H4 LEDs shown below, but I seriously doubt they can compare. Think I'll just stick with Haolgen and carry a spare.
