My wife has decided to assert her independence and at the ripe old age of 57 has got her learners licence and bought her first motor cycle.
Well if one is pedantic it is actually a motor tricycle. 300CC's of Italian stallion!

She won't break any speed records but we went for our first joint ride for lunch today and I couldn't be any prouder of the old girl. While she'll still pillion on the longer trips we can enjoy some rides together in the local area.
The MP3 seems like the perfect learners mount. Stable, auto and handles pretty well. No where near as intimidating for a first time rider as a geared bike. She might trade up when she gets her full licence and a bit of experience but at this stage she is ecstatic with her choice.

Hey, whatever makes her happy thats all that matters. If that thing made me happy i'd have one. She'll possibly trade up, but you never know. She may stay happy with that thing. All that matters is she gets to ride with you and she's probably proud and happy about that. After all, who really wants to sit in back staring overs the rider's shoulder?

Not laughing mate. There are lots that say ' wish I had done that' and never bothered. Good on her.

Hey Frank, good for her, should be more of it.

At least where you live she doesn't have to battle with city traffic while she learns.

My wife contemplated getting her learners, but gutted out.

The MP3 is a perfect bike to learn on.

Hey, I had an MP3 250 for two years!
This was to get back on the road after a break and I used to pick up my daughter from school complete with school bag, clarinet, sports kit, DT folders and anything else she had!
I'm not a brilliant rider and the fact that it had two front wheels saved me a coule of times which is no joke.

It was great not only to slide the back out round damp, tight corners - try it and you'll see what I mean but it got me back on to bikes.

My only problem was that with so much salt on UK roads, it melted in no time and I was tardy in keeping it clean.

Best of luck to your better half - a good choice and great fun!!!

We have A LOT of these over here in Switzerland!
Honestly - I do envy the riders when it comes to town traffic - they NEVER need to put their feet down! The thing just stays nicely upright.... Good thing.

Well I'm saying - WELL DONE Mrs. Ninox_s - enjoy yourself! That's what it's all about.

Congratulations to your wife!! I wish mine had gone with something like one of those, she got a 250 Honda Rebel which is a good first bike but the shifting intimidates her.

Enjoy

There are a few Piaggio's around here. It's a pretty ingenious design in that the bike still leans like a regular motorcycle.

I was thinking about a Spyder for my wife, but I took one out and hated it. It corners like a car, but worse. Every time I cornered, it felt like the inside front wheel was coming off the ground.

Maybe this would be a better alternative for Mrs. enGage.

Glad your wife is out with you - still working on mine...

I'm with you EnGage! I hadn't left the parking area of the demo stand at Daytona Bike Week before I wanted to just get off the damn thing. I guess I envisioned cornering to be something like a go cart. Wow was I wrong! Maybe it's just because I'm used to leaning into a turn but even at low speed I felt like this thing was going to fall over. It wandered all over the road, was underpowered and underbraked. I was kind of thinking of an alternate plan when I became even more of an old fart than I already am. The Spyder is definitely NOT that plan.

Good for her! I hate to brag but I will. I am very proud of my (won't mention age but near your wife's) old wife but she decided to go and take the Learners course. She then picked out a 650 cc. Suzuki Savage-now called Boulevard S40. That lasted 3 weeks. She sold that on Craigslist then got this Suzuki S50-800cc V-twin. 13.4 sec 1/4 mile. Handles like a Sportbike-50 mpg. A beautiful bike for a beautiful woman. We did 250 miles on Sunday and she keeps up with the Thunderbird with no effort. I have been asked a few times how she went from passenger to rider. I had a sneaky plan to get her to like riding. I made sure my bike had a comfortable seat with back rest. My first bike was a sport touring type of Honda with a Corbin seat. When she was aboard I never drove really fast or cornered with much angle. It took 5 years for her to get her own wheels and I'm very proud of her. I'm lucky to have a wife that loves to ride as much as I do (maybe more).

Hope your wife will move up to a real bike. Make sure to let her pick it out herself. You just get to polish the wheels and change the oil!

All the best,

Cycle World magazine commented on the MP3 in their recent issue. They didn't do a full test but rode it a bit and were very impressed. They were amazed at the stability and the way it tracked over bumps in the road. I don't think they impress too easily with most "scooters."

MP3 is very diffused in Italy, you can find it expecially in big cities, it have 2 main advantages: no need to put down feets when stop on semafor and more security when cross tramway railroads. Stability is excellent and not only on low speed. Seems impossible but is an excellent scooter.

An excellent choice... well done Mrs Ninox. If they made one with a ~1000cc'sh engine I'd have one in a flash for commuting.
Stability is excellent, double wheels equals double brakes, and double tyre patch.
If you get a minute worth looking at them on Youtube, especially where the guy is flying along and puts one front wheel up on the kerb while the other is still on the road. Ride safe and enjoy.
