| | Posted : 30 Jul 2014 - 05:42 Post title : Quick release windscreen with headlight cowl? | | | Has anyone modified a quick release windscreen to fit around the Triumph headlight cowl? The previous owner of my Bird had a handlebar-mounted windscreen set up on the bike, but it's a bit too small and too close to me to be really effective. It also gives a fair bit of buffeting around my helmet, and there is little adjustment available (not to mention ugly brackets bolted to my bars).
I only want a screen for longer rides with a fair bit of highway speeds involved, but would like the convenience of the quick release and better wind protection than my current set up. What I don't want to have to do is remove my headlight cowl every time I want to ride with a screen.
I was looking at the National Cycles SwitchBlade 2-Up as as option, and it looks like the windscreen frame is high enough that I could cut out the area below the horizontal frame piece to clear the headlight cowl.
Has anyone done this before? Thoughts?

Went through some of the 'Bird photos on this site and found the attached one. They seemed at a similar angle so I just copied part of the cowl across to the bike with the screen. (Half a headlight to position match with the other bike) It was only a couple of minutes job but I think it shows the cowl might be too close to the cross beam of the screen. That's only for this screen though... (Triumph OEM ??)

The National Cycles screen looks like the cross bar is higher than the Triumph piece. Not really interested in spending $400+ only to find out there's no way to make it fit.
I'll keep an eye out at the local Rat rides and see if there's anyone with a similar screen I can take some measurements from.

By the way that cowl with new paint is listed in the classifieds.

I occasionally used a windvest screen, which mounted directly to my handlebars. I used the 14", and it worked ok, but the 16" would have worked better. It looked kind of goofy, but it was better than removing the cowl.
